KEY ACHIEVEMENTS
Working from floating barges.
High focus on environmental aspects of the works.
Installation of 813 mm x 12.5 mm steel pipes for the maximum length of 25.0m.
The project
On behalf of Boliden AS, Vest Betong AS has been given responsibility to build a new quay at the factory area in Odda. In this regard, there was a need for the establishment of a steel pile foundation for the new quay in order to continue the works. The foundation of this project consists of 22 steel piles with a diameter of 813mm which must have been drilled into good rock.
The challenge
- Working off the barge close to the existing structure with significant water depth (up to 20 m).
- Strict environmental conditions to protect local environment.
- Strict quality tolerances for the steel pile installation.
The solution
- Drilling in reverse circulation (RC) technique to mitigate the sediment pollution of the water by collecting the sediments at the top of the drilling string.
- GPS system used to ensure the drilling angle, azimuth, position and final height are met regardless of the tide water level.
- Meeting the high-quality standards after the drilling by using a video inspection camera and water loss measurement.
